February is National Library Lover’s Month! In honor of this, we’d like to encourage you to go support your local library and/or do some book related activities with your little ones! Reading is a skill that carries us through life and there are so many ways to incorporate it into play and exploration.
Below is a brief guide to how you can celebrate National Library Lover’s Month and cultivate a love for literature within your child.
- Choose a book that has themes you can build activities around. This will make it easy to connect fun sensory play to literature!
- Read the book intentionally. Discuss characters, emotions, environments, and more by using open ended questions that encourage thought. For infants and toddlers, explain what you see! (Ex. After reading a section, elaborate saying, “I see a butterfly. I see the colors purple and blue!”)
- Identify the concepts in the book that can be related to activities. Think about themes like Science, Math, Art, and Literature.
- Design some activities!
