Swimming & Development

It is never too early or too late to learn how to swim! Teaching an infant or young child to swim has great benefits. Not only does it increase their level of safety when around water, it can also impact their physical and mental health.

Below are some benefits of swim time for infants and young children:

  • Swimming can improve cognitive functioning, positive impacting reading skills, language development, and overall academic learning.
  • Learning to swim early can reduce the risk of drowning.
  • Knowing how to swim may improve confidence by instilling greater self-control, a desire to succeed, and better self-esteem.
  • Swim lessons and practicing swimming can increase the quality time between infants and caregivers.
  • Swimming builds muscle and promotes muscle control.
  • Swimming improves coordination and balance.
  • Swimming can improve sleeping patterns as using muscle groups and working hard to learn a new physical skill increases the body’s need for sleep.
  • Expending energy while swimming can improve appetite.
