Summer is upon us, and with it comes endless opportunities for splashing, playing, and making wonderful memories with our preschoolers! While we all love the warmth and brightness of the sun, it’s super important to remember that those little ones have delicate skin that needs extra protection. Sunburns can happen quickly and are not only painful but can also increase the risk of skin damage later in life.
So, before you head out for that park visit or backyard water fun, let’s go over some essential sun safety tips to keep our little rays of sunshine happy and healthy all season long!
1. Sunscreen: Your Best Friend!
This is probably the most obvious tip, but it’s worth repeating and emphasizing!
- Choose Wisely: Opt for a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher. “Broad-spectrum” means it protects against both UVA and UVB rays. Look for formulas specifically designed for babies or sensitive skin to minimize irritation.
- Apply Generously and Often: Don’t skimp! Apply a generous amount to all exposed skin about 15-30 minutes before going outside. This gives the sunscreen time to absorb. Reapply every two hours, or more frequently if your child is swimming or sweating.
- Don’t Forget Those Tricky Spots: Ears, neck, tops of feet, and even the part in their hair are often missed. Be thorough!
2. Dress for Success (in the Shade!)
Clothing can be a fantastic first line of defense against the sun’s rays.
- Lightweight, Loose-Fitting Clothing: Think long-sleeved shirts and pants made from breathable fabrics like cotton. Look for clothing with a UPF (Ultraviolet Protection Factor) rating for even better protection.
- Wide-Brimmed Hats: A hat with a wide brim (at least 2-3 inches) is crucial for protecting their face, ears, and neck. Make sure it’s comfortable so they’ll keep it on!
- Sunglasses: Believe it or not, little eyes need protection too! Look for sunglasses that block 99-100% of UVA and UVB rays. While it might be a battle, getting them used to wearing them early on can be beneficial.
3. Seek Out Shade!
Shade is your friend, especially during the peak sun hours.
- Plan Your Outings: Try to schedule outdoor activities before 10 AM and after 4 PM, when the sun’s rays are less intense.
- Utilize Natural Shade: Trees, umbrellas, canopies – take advantage of any available shade. If you’re going to be somewhere without natural shade, bring your own pop-up tent or umbrella.
- Take Breaks: Even in the shade, it’s good to take breaks from direct sun exposure, especially on very hot days.
4. Hydration, Hydration, Hydration!
While not directly about sun protection, staying hydrated is crucial for overall summer safety and can help prevent heat exhaustion, which often goes hand-in-hand with sun exposure.
- Offer Water Frequently: Little ones can get dehydrated quickly. Offer water often, even if they don’t ask for it.
- Healthy Snacks: Juicy fruits and vegetables like watermelon, cucumber, and oranges can also contribute to their hydration.
5. Be a Role Model!
Kids learn by watching us. If you’re diligent about your own sun safety, they’re more likely to follow suit. Wear your hat, sunglasses, and apply sunscreen. Make it a family habit!
Summer is a magical time for preschoolers, full of discovery and fun. By following these simple sun safety tips, we can ensure they enjoy every moment without the worry of sunburns. Here’s to a summer filled with happy, healthy, and protected little ones!
