Ongoing Assessment Program
At Play and Learn, we are so much more than a traditional daycare service. We work closely with you to monitor your child’s overall development and track developmental milestones.
Within 45 days of enrollment, your child will undergo an Ages and Stages Screening, a nationally-recognized developmental screening program designed to identify potential developmental delays and behavioral issues at all childhood development stages.
Infants and toddlers will be assessed at required checkpoints through the Ounce Scale, an authentic, research-based performance assessment for children from birth to three and a half years. Infants and toddlers are assessed at the end of each developmental checkpoint; 4 months, 8 months, 12 months, 18 months, 24 months, 30 months, and 36 months.
Preschoolers are regularly assessed through their classroom performance, with data input by their teachers. Children are given opportunities to demonstrate knowledge through their everyday activities rather than more traditional testing methods. Children ages 3 to 5 are assessed three times per year; October 15th, February 15th, and May 15, using the Work Sampling System.
In addition to formal assessments, Play and Learn uses daily observations from teachers to track your child’s progress and development in the context of his or her everyday activities. These daily observations are collected regularly and form the basis of teacher assessments.
Naturally, involvement from families is critical here. That’s why we give families an opportunity three times each year (fall, winter and spring) to meet with their child’s teacher and Center Director to discuss any issues.
