Welcome To Jenkintown Day Nursery!

Hilltop and Baeder Roads Jenkintown, PA

Our program is designed to promote growth through learning. Our professional teaching staff uses the Pennsylvania Early Learning Standards as a guide to create interactive lessons for all the children in our care. Our program at all age levels focuses on social and emotional skills, cognitive and physical development, math, language, creative arts, and science. During the day, the children develop self-confidence by participating in classroom routines and playing cooperatively with peers.  In our creative curriculum, children also enjoy weekly sports and bi-weekly music classes. Progress reports are completed three times a year with an opportunity for parent- teacher conferences. Jenkintown Day Nursery program endeavors to guide each child into reaching their fullest potential.

Jenkintown Day Nursery Curriculum

Here at Jenkintown Day Nursery, we value the power of play and the overwhelming brain research that links play to successful and lasting outcomes for children’s cognitive and social development!  We adopted Teaching Strategies, The Creative Curriculum®, because it is aligned with both our play-based values and the Pennsylvania Early Learning Standards.  Our curriculum addresses the learning needs of children from birth through school age by providing both intentional teaching experiences and opportunities for assessing each child’s development. Our center directors and teachers are well-trained in our curriculum and assessment approach.  We are committed to implementing The Creative Curriculum® with fidelity while also integrating the interests and backgrounds of your children into lesson planning.  Every day is planned but also responsive to the needs of your children and the lessons are shared with you, the family, though the daily reports you will receive in our Tadpole App, which is directly linked to Teaching Strategies, The Creative Curriculum®.

Infant and Toddler Curriculum

The Creative Curriculum® for Infants, Toddlers and Twos helps teachers provide nurturing, consistent and loving care that will help your child flourish. Learning is embedded into daily routines and meaningful individualized experiences that nurture your child’s development.

Routines in our classrooms include everyday activities like hellos and goodbyes, diapering and toileting, mealtimes, sleeping and nap time, and getting dressed. Creating a consistent routine builds trust and forms positive relationships with teachers. Our curriculum guides your child’s teacher to observe your child’s unique interests and growing abilities to choose the best materials and activities that suit their needs.  This curriculum is approved by the Pennsylvania Office of Child Development and Learning and addresses the PA Infant/Toddler Standards

Preschool/Pre-K Curriculum

The Creative Curriculum® for our preschool classrooms fill your child’s day with rich learning experiences rooted in exploration, discovery and play. When children play, they acquire language, explore social roles, learn how to solve problems and learn how to control their feelings. They learn about themselves, other people, the community and the world around them. When children’s play is guided by a caring teacher who connects it to learning, the results are both joyful and meaningful!

This comprehensive, research-based curriculum features exploration and play as a way of learning for preschool-age children through the use of “studies”.  Children can delve deep into the study of topics such as Balls, Trees, or Clothing to name a few, by staying on topic for four to six weeks at a time and embedding learning objectives into each experience. It guides our teachers to create a high-quality learning environment for our children that is based on the importance of play with a balanced approach to include teacher-directed instruction during Large Group, Storytime, and Small Group experiences that are connected to the study while teaching important preschool skills. Studies show that this method of preschool teaching helps teachers build children’s confidence, creativity, and critical thinking skills to set them up for a lifetime of success.  This curriculum is approved by the Pennsylvania Office of Child Development and Learning and addresses the PA Pre-Kindergarten Standards.

Hi! I’m Kimberly, and I’ve been part of the Jenkintown Day Nursery team since June 2025. I have a bachelor’s degree in education from Temple University and am currently working toward my Director’s Credential to continue growing in the field of education.

Before joining JDN, I was the Director of a before- and after-school program for 12 years. I’ve also worked with children ages 6 weeks to 3 years in a daycare setting and spent a year as a Center Director at another early childhood center. These experiences have given me a deep appreciation for the different stages of early childhood development and the importance of creating a supportive, engaging environment for every child.
My passion has always been working with children. I truly enjoy being a positive light in their day and helping create preschool experiences that are not only educational but memorable. I also love encouraging and inspiring others who work with children to bring that same positive energy every day.

I’m so happy to be part of the Jenkintown community and to contribute to a place that values children, families, and early learning as much as I do.

All About Us

We provide a safe, supportive and enriching environment for children ages 1-5. Our children get an outstanding start on their education. Jenkintown Day Nursery is a place that feels like home and where children develop a love for learning. We promote independence, self-esteem, positive attitudes and readiness skills. We prepare them for success! Our beautiful campus is enhanced by two large, outdoor, age-appropriate playgrounds. We also offer an Indoor Playhouse with age-appropriate gross motor equipment. Children also enjoy in-house activities like yoga, music, art as well as fun family events. Jenkintown Day Nursery provides breakfast, lunch and afternoon snack for children. For over 100 years we have remained faithful to our mission to provide affordable, quality, educational day care to our families in need. We look forward to meeting you and working together to help your child learn and grow!

Our History

It was a bitter cold February in 1903 when Mrs. Theodore B. Culver heard about small children who were left alone in a barn all day while their parents went off to work. When she went to see if this was true, she found the children huddled together in the straw to keep warm. Surmising that there were other families who had no safe place to leave their children while they worked, Mrs. Culver took immediate action. She quickly found a safe, warm place and volunteers to care for the children. In March of 1903, the Jenkintown Day Nursery opened its doors to six children, six days a week. Their parents were charged six cents a day. Within six months of opening, larger quarters were needed, and JDN was moved to Thomas and Water Streets in the Borough of Jenkintown. In the early years, the Nursery was sustained by contributions, charity teas, rummage sales, and donations of cash, wood, coal, food and clothing. Classes were held for the parents, teaching sewing, cooking and gardening. Lectures and entertainment were also offered. Fees were set on a sliding scale based on income, as they still are today. By the 1960s, the need for child care had increased. Our current facility at Baeder and Hilltop roads was built, and the nursery moved there in 1965. Thanks to generous donations for our Centennial celebration in 2003, we added our Playhouse, a multi-purpose building which accommodates art, movement and music classes and indoor play. For more than 100 years we have remained faithful to our mission to provide affordable, quality, educational child care to our families.

Jenkintown Day Nursery Foundation

For many decades, a volunteer board oversaw operations and raised funds to ensure the nursery’s ability to provide scholarships to its families. In 2015, the nursery’s board and operations structure changed. Operation of JDN was transferred to Play & Learn, a non-profit organization which has 12 early learning and childcare centers in Montgomery County. The Jenkintown Day Nursery Foundation was established, with several longtime members of the JDN Board of Directors as the new JDNF Board of Directors. The Foundation continues to have a close relationship with Jenkintown Day Nursery, continuing to provide many of its families with scholarship aid along a sliding scale. However, the scholarships now are more broadly available, with many families at other Play & Learn sites receiving assistance, and, as funding is available, for children attending other quality centers in the area. In addition, JDNF oversees distribution of assistance from the Jeanne Chauveau Trust, which offers one-time grants to families in our region who face hardship due to medical needs. These grants are generally distributed in the form of tuition assistance. Learn more about the Chauveau Trust. With these changes, the Jenkintown Day Nursery Foundation is well-equipped to continue supporting working families in our community well into the 21st century — in keeping with the mission set by Annie Culver so many years ago.
