How Read Across America Week Ignites Children’s Love for Reading

Celebrating Read Across America Week: How We Spark a Love of Reading

At Play & Learn, one of our greatest joys is watching children discover the magic of books. Read Across America Week is the perfect opportunity to celebrate stories, imagination, and the lifelong habits that grow from early literacy. This special week gives us time to highlight just how powerful reading can be—especially for young learners.

Creating a Literacy‑Rich Environment

Throughout the week, our classrooms transform into cozy reading spaces filled with inviting book displays, soft seating, and themed reading corners. Children can choose from a wide variety of picture books, early readers, and nonfiction stories that match their interests. By making books accessible and exciting, we help children feel naturally drawn to explore them on their own.

Daily Storytime Adventures

Each day features a special storytime led by teachers who bring books to life through animated reading, props, and interactive questions. Children participate by predicting what might happen next, pointing out details in the illustrations, and sharing connections to their own world. These conversations help build comprehension skills and strengthen vocabulary in a joyful, relaxed way.

Guest Readers From Our Community

One of the highlights of Read Across America Week is welcoming guest readers—family members, staff from other departments, and community friends. Children love hearing familiar voices share their favorite books. These moments remind families how powerful it is when children see adults enjoying reading too.

Literacy‑Inspired Activities

To extend learning beyond storytime, classrooms participate in hands‑on activities connected to each book of the day, such as:

  • Creating artwork inspired by illustrations
  • Acting out favorite scenes with puppets
  • Building story characters using craft materials
  • Exploring new vocabulary through matching games

These activities reinforce comprehension and encourage creativity while keeping literacy fun and engaging.

Encouraging Family Reading at Home

We also share recommendations with families to help continue the celebration beyond the classroom. Whether reading at bedtime, visiting the local library, or letting children choose books based on their interests, every reading moment strengthens early literacy skills. We believe that when families and educators partner together, children gain confidence and enthusiasm that lasts far beyond this week.

Why Read Across America Matters

Books open doors to imagination, empathy, language development, and lifelong learning. By celebrating Read Across America Week, we help children connect with stories in meaningful ways—creating memories and habits that support school readiness and early academic success.

At Play & Learn, our mission is to spark a love of reading every single day. This week is a wonderful reminder of how important that work truly is.
