Holiday Traditions

The holiday season is coming up, and no matter what you may celebrate, or even if you don’t, traditions are extremely beneficial for children. Creating traditions when children are young is a way to support their mental and emotional growth. Traditions help children relate to the world around them and make sense of intangible ideas.

Traditions can also strengthen family ties, prevent overwhelm, build imagination, and promote critical thinking. Building traditions that evoke joyous anticipation for children is a great way to make rituals fun and engaging. Then, through these traditions, you can pass on the culture, beliefs, and ideas that are most important to you.

Ideas for holiday traditions:

  • Eating a special meal
  • Donating time or goods to a certain organization
  • Decorating
  • Cooking or baking together
